SPAM - A RECESSION DEAL

Before the rise of the dreaded Spam Mail of the tech age, there's an excess of America's first canned ham (''Hormel Flavor-Sealed Ham'') circa 1926 in a form of a pink blob that Hormel developed as a commodity eleven years later. The first canned meat product that did not require refrigeration called SPAM.

And why is it the hottest commodity nowadays? The Deal is, a can of Spam for 2 bucks or so a pop can be one person's Breakfast, Lunch and dinner. Slide it in the middle of white bread is acceptable. Cube it in your soup is a good try.Fry two pieces of a cut spam is good enough with eggs and rice or bread if you want too.Word has it that Spam's maker, Hormel Foods Corp., reported in May that it saw strong sales of Spam in the second quarter, helping push up its profits 14 percent. According to sales information coming from Hormel, provided by The Nielsen Co., Spam sales were up 10.6 percent in the 12-week period ending May 3, compared to last year.

Do you know that this was one of the secret colonizing arsenal that the U.S. ever had in the World War II? Ton loads of Spam were surplused at the american bases, we had a taste of it along with the same sized canned corned beefs of the world. Here in the Philippines, Spam is considered in some extent the hottest commodity in the OFW and American lover packages. Comes the most coveted next to chocolates and Pringles. There is a local version of spam here, a chinese manufactured thing called MA-LING. I would always have that in rice, fried rice and egg next to my black coffee.

In Hawaii, Spam is called "The Hawaiian Steak." One popular Spam dish in Hawaii is Spam musubi, in which cooked Spam is combined with rice and nori seaweed and classified as onigiri. Hawaii along with Guam and other Pacific Island regions is the epicenter of Spam sales, Hugely popular and is the closest staple next to rice. Amazing.

Flavors of Spam are:

Spam Classic - original flavor
Spam Hot & Spicy - with tabasco flavor
Spam Less Sodium - "25% less sodium"
Spam Lite - "33% less calories and 50% less fat"
Spam Oven Roasted Turkey
Spam Hickory Smoke flavor
Spam Spread - "if you're a spreader, not a slicer...just like Spam Classic, but in a spreadable form"
Spam with Bacon
Spam with Cheese
Spam Garlic
Spam Golden Honey Grail - a limited-release special flavor made in honor of Monty Python's SPAMALOT Broadway musical.
